Why an internal medicine physician?
Internal medicine physicians — internists — train exclusively in the medicine of adults. Not children, not obstetrics: adults, and especially the complex health of adults as they age. Managing diabetes alongside heart disease alongside arthritis. Understanding how nine medications interact. Knowing when a symptom is nothing and when it’s the first sign of something that matters.
As your health becomes more complex, you need more than a doctor who can treat one problem at a time. You need a physician trained to see the whole picture — and to be the one doctor who ties everything together: your specialists, your medications, your history, your goals. That is precisely what internists do, and it’s all we do.
Why you will always see a physician
Primary care is changing. At many practices today, your visit — even your annual physical — is with a nurse practitioner or a physician assistant, with a doctor somewhere in the background. NPs and PAs are valued professionals, and many patients are well served by them.
We believe the medicine of aging calls for a different standard. Every internal medicine physician completes four years of medical school and at least three years of residency. We chose to go further.
Dr. Patrick Garrett completed six years of residency and fellowship training — internal medicine plus nephrology, the specialty of kidney disease, blood pressure, and the complications of diabetes. Dr. Christine Garrett completed nine years of residency and fellowship training and is board-certified in four specialties — internal medicine, anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, and hematopathology. Pathology is the science of diagnosis itself. When she reviews your lab results, she reads them the way the specialist in the laboratory does — because she is one.
When your health involves several conditions at once, a long medication list, and judgment calls where experience is everything, that depth isn’t a luxury. It’s what you’ve earned. At Garrett Internal Medicine, every visit is with a physician trained far beyond the minimum. Every physical. Every sick visit. Every follow-up. Not usually — always.
